Kauai covers about 562 square miles, making it the fourth-largest Hawaiian island. Known as the “Garden Island,” it’s famous for lush landscapes, dramatic cliffs, and golden beaches.
Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands, formed around 5 million years ago. Its age has shaped deep valleys, rich soil, and the island’s iconic Na Pali Coast.
Most visitors arrive via Lihue Airport (LIH), just minutes from Banyan Harbor Resort. The airport offers direct flights from cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix, and Denver, plus inter-island connections from Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island.
Often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” Waimea Canyon is 10–14 miles long and up to 3,600 feet deep. It’s a must-see for its colorful cliffs, sweeping views, and hiking opportunities.
Highlights include Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon, Hanalei Bay, Wailua Falls, and Spouting Horn. The island offers everything from scenic boat tours to cultural experiences.
Popular activities include boat tours along the Na Pali Coast, hikes like Kalalau or Sleeping Giant, kayaking the Wailua River, snorkeling at Poipu Beach, and visiting local farmers’ markets.
Absolutely—Kauai offers endless activities for every traveler. From hiking the Na Pali Coast and exploring Waimea Canyon to snorkeling at Poipu Beach and kayaking the Wailua River, there’s something new to discover every day. Banyan Harbor Resort’s central Lihue location puts you within easy reach of the island’s top attractions, beaches, and adventure tours.
You can’t drive fully around Kauai because the rugged Na Pali Coast has no roads. However, traveling the main highway from Ke’e Beach on the north shore to Polihale State Park on the west side takes about 2.5 to 3 hours without stops. With sightseeing, plan for a full day. Banyan Harbor Resort’s central location in Lihue makes it easy to explore both the north and south shores during your stay.
Yes—renting a car is highly recommended in Kauai. Public transportation is limited, and many of the island’s best beaches, trails, and viewpoints are spread out. Having a car lets you explore at your own pace and reach hidden gems off the main roads. Banyan Harbor Resort is just minutes from Lihue Airport, making it easy to pick up a rental car and start your adventure right away.
Most travelers recommend spending at least 5 to 7 days in Kauai to fully experience the island’s diverse landscapes, beaches, and activities. This gives you time to explore highlights like the Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon, and Hanalei Bay without feeling rushed. Banyan Harbor Resort’s central Lihue location makes it easy to see all sides of the island, whether you’re here for a quick getaway or a longer stay.
Kauai is filled with breathtaking scenery, but many consider the Na Pali Coast the island’s most stunning area. Towering emerald cliffs, hidden beaches, and turquoise waters create postcard-perfect views. Other favorites include Waimea Canyon’s colorful valleys, Hanalei Bay’s crescent shoreline, and the lush Wailua River Valley—all easily accessible from Banyan Harbor Resort’s central location in Lihue.
The “best” side of Kauai depends on your travel style. Many visitors love staying on the east side in Lihue or Kapaa—home to Banyan Harbor Resort—because it offers easy access to all parts of the island, from Waimea Canyon in the west to Hanalei Bay in the north. The east side also has nearby beaches, restaurants, shopping, and the island’s main airport, making it a convenient home base for exploring Kauai.
Kauai enjoys warm, tropical weather year-round, with average highs between 77°F and 85°F. The north and east are lush and rainier, while the south and west are sunnier and drier.
Enjoy sunshine any time of year when you escape to the Garden Isle. Check out our special offers where you can save up to 25%.
